Hungry Hungry Hummers

Mike discovered this hummingbird nest in our tumbledown garage. There is a lot of ivy invading it, coming through the ceiling and hanging down inside; the egg-cup-sized nest is firmly cemented to it. It’s a fairly sheltered spot, and at stepladder height, so Mike took this footage of the mother feeding the pair. We think they were about a week old when he took it. He’s planning to take more as soon as the weather is bright enough for good filming. We are very respectful of the birds and are as quiet as possible around the nest–they don’t seem to mind. Perhaps the mother recognizes us from the front porch hummingbird feeder!
One of the chicks (the one at the back) seems dominant–he’s got his wings spread completely covering the front chick except for his head. And he gets fed more. Of course, I’m rooting for the underdog. Note the sleepy blinking!

I heard somewhere that Hummingbird eggs are the size of tic-tacs — truly amazing. Great post.
