Recycled Bedsheet Shirt

one of a kind top made of a vintage sheet

I’ve made a design prototype of my new angelic top out of an old bedsheet.  Actually it was a duvet cover, so nobody ever slept *on* it.  I spotted it at the thrift shop, inspected it and saw that it was like new (it had flat braid all around the edges, that stuff usually looks really bad with any wear at all, and it looked perfect) so I  immediately grabbed it for my duvet.  But when I got home I found out that they had mislabeled it, it wasn’t a queen but a double size.  I didn’t really want to cut it up, because the pattern on it is so unusual, but I also found it really inspiring and could picture it doing interesting things on a shirt.

I listed it in my Etsy shop last night, and I was thrilled to see that it got many times more views than my usual little bags and stuff.   I think this shirt could be rocked in so many ways–unbelted, as a night shirt (it’s that comfy, and you’d blend perfectly into your bed!) over jeans, with a big masterful belt to show you’re not a wimp, or even dressed up with a sweet skirt for Sunday church. (it’s got a nice low back neck so you can distract the men in the pews behind you as you bow your head over your hymnal).

I plan to make these tops in a super soft fine plain cotton with a high thread count, and hand dye them and screenprint them–the fabric will be a little softer than the sheets.  But if, like me, you do really like the sheet concept,  you might want to see my next project–ruffly skirts out of more recycled sheets–mixing and matching the patterns, and perhaps overdying them so they’re not so, er,  sheety.
